So the casting process is fully underway here with “It’s Almost Morning”. We had over 400 submissions total for the roles in both “I Surrender” and “Use Me” with talent submitting from Atlanta to North Carolina and even a few in Alabama. After narrowing that down to potential talent, we sent out invitations for a specific audition. I’ve got to say, there were some incredibly awesome auditions.
We were very intentional in giving only a few contextual clues to the story or the character. Because we’re filming a music video without recorded dialogue, we’re relying on our actors to be able to tell an incredibly believable story with only their facial expressions and body language. They’ll be improvising some dialogue here and there, but it’s going to be very minimal and not recorded. In a typical audition, you would receive what’s called a side. This is a small amount of dialogue that you’d record yourself saying, maybe on your own or with a partner. For our video though, we simply gave the majority of our supporting characters the instruction to “tell us a happy story and a sad story without any dialogue”. It was certainly unconventional, purposefully vague, and it garnered some very interesting results! It’s a very challenging thing, as an actor, to deliver a performance with very little contextual clues, but several of the talent really told an amazing story without ever speaking. It made several of our choices very difficult.
I remember as an actor I always found it disheartening to lose out on a role. On this side though, it’s amazing how superficial you can feel. Literally, someone looks slightly older, or younger, or someone’s smile just grabs you somehow differently. It’s all those amazing things that make us unique that sometimes disqualify us from a role. Thankfully, we’ve got a great team looking through and making choices together. We were able to piece together what I believe a great cast. I was very impressed with the level of talent that submitted, and honestly, it’s really flattering!
So, as of this weekend, we’ll be sending out our booking requests. Hopefully everyone is available and still interested in accepting the roles they’ve auditioned for. When they do, we’ll happily share some of the amazing talent with you so you can get excited about what they’ll bring to the table.
Enjoy the adventure!
