If there’s one thing that’s certain in the film industry, probably like much of life, is that the unexpected always happens. The production for USE ME has been quite a different process than our pre-production work was for “I SURRENDER”. That’s not to say that we’re not incredibly excited about getting started in t-minus 10 hours, but the style and story are different, so our approach has been as well. The story of USE ME is somewhat biographical in nature. I took the story of Karen Hornsby and fictionalized quite a lot of it in order to fit into a 4 minute song and then I paired it with a fictionalized version of Jason Kelloway’s story. Jason is the founder of Cup of Love Ministry (www.cupofloveministry.com) which faithfully serves the homeless in Jacksonville a warm cup of coffee as well as other necessities while also creating friendships with them. Jason’s vision for the organization is amazing, and it’s been truly a privilege to meet him and be able to bring some light to his ministry with this project. Karen and Jason’s stories interweave in our fictional world and in the end, we hope the audience is compelled to step boldly towards whatever God has called THEM to do.
In comparison, our I SURRENDER crew was a total of 6-7 guys per day, on USE ME we’re going mostly handheld shooting and have a consistent crew of 3. What that means for us as a production team is that the feel of the piece will be much more intimate and organic. We’ll be shooting at a variety of locations downtown on Wednesday and then some wonderful locations on the West Side on Thursday. We’re going to have a lot of fun on Thursday as we are partnering with a cool coffee shop called THE URBAN BEAN (www.theurbanbeancoffeehouse.com). We’ll also be shooting some fun crowd scenes at Southpoint Community Church as well.
